Ensuring learning to read and write: confidence for girls and boys

Quetzal cried often in class, was shy, and struggled to connect sounds with letters during his first months of primary school in 2024. His teacher, Leysy Balan Kantún, recounts that he went from writing only circles and lines to moving past the pre-syllabic stage and forming words, just like his classmates at the "Felipe Carrillo Puerto" Primary School in Halachó, a municipality in Yucatán, Mexico. Quetzal no longer cries in class, and his confidence keeps growing.

This story is the result of an educational community that also began a journey in 2024: schools in Yucatán developed their own Literacy Policy, as did 10 other state education systems in Mexico with UNESCO's support, intending to ensure that girls and boys learn to read and write in the first two grades of elementary school.
