Oaxaca Municipality leads activities with UNESCO to nurture children's connection to their heritage

The guides who lead these activities received specialized prior training to strengthen their pedagogical skills, their heritage interpretation abilities, and their capacity to engage diverse audiences. With this training, they designed the guided tours and built their own active-learning methodologies.

The initiative is part of UNESCO's "Communities for Heritage" programme, supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia under the cash for work scheme, which aims to strengthen the capacities of local communities in World Heritage cities across Latin America and the Caribbean and to consolidate sustainable, culturally focused tourism. In Oaxaca, the projects focus, on the one hand, on strengthening the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage and integrating it into urban planning and, on the other, on improving visitor management and community engagement for responsible tourism.
