KFSH Combines Global Transplant Volume With Surgical Innovation in Living-Donor Care
Through its Organ Transplant Centre of Excellence, KFSH performed 882 organ transplants in 2024, a six percent increase on the previous year, placing the program among the top ten transplant centers globally. Its kidney transplant program has surpassed 5,000 transplants since inception.
Volume alone, however, does not resolve the central constraint in transplantation: donor compatibility. KFSH addresses this through a paired kidney donation program in which incompatible donor-recipient pairs are matched across a wider pool. In 2025 the program completed 130 paired kidney transplants, the highest number performed at a single center worldwide, exceeding the 73 transplants recorded across 23 centers in Canada and the 94 performed at the highest-volume single center in the United States during the same period.
Since its launch in 2016, the program has completed 691 paired transplants. The result reflects a fully integrated operational model within one center, combining advanced immunology laboratory capabilities for precise compatibility testing with coordinated matching and scheduling across surgical teams.
In living-donor transplantation, KFSH has pursued a parallel objective: reducing what a healthy donor must undergo in order to save another person. The hospital's robotic liver transplant program, which began in 2023 with the world's first fully robotic liver transplant, has grown into an integrated program supported by more than 1,700 robotic living-donor liver resections.
That work produced a further global first in 2026, when KFSH performed the world's first liver transplant using a single-port robotic system, in a six-year-old boy who had suffered recurrent episodes of acute liver failure. The transplant followed the donation of the left lobe of the child's father's liver, extending single-incision robotic surgery into one of the most delicate areas of pediatric transplantation.
Taken together, these results describe a program in which volume, compatibility science and surgical technique are treated as one system rather than separate achievements. KFSH will present this model among its clinical capabilities at the C3 US NYC Davos of Healthcare™ Summit 2026 on September 14 in New York City.
